The trail starts as Ptarmigan trail and was a challenging hike up for our youngest, who’s not used to hiking. My husband and I went with my adult son and daughter and our 11 year old daughter.

If you have the time, do yourself a favor and take this hike. The trail was well hiked but not overly crowded. We hiked on a beautiful day, and was surprised how quickly the weather turned and the rain started. I wondered what they were thinking! You will want lots of water, some food, and rain gear if you have it. On the way down we would see people headed up only a bottle of water in their hands. We each carried a hydration backpack, and we had 160oz of water between us, it was barely enough. About 1/2 way there you will pass a beautiful small waterfall with lots of big flat rocks to set and rest a bit. The trail is a gentle climb with amazing views all along the way, I used hiking poles which I believe were very useful and I'm so glad I had them. It was so cold I couldn't stay but a few seconds, but it sure felt good on my feet. We took our shoes off and enjoyed a quick walk in the water. It's surface reflects the mountain behind it and the turquoise waters lure you to the edge. The lake itself is magical in it's beauty. I'm sure many made it in better time as we are overweight and walked at a slower pace then most. We did and it was totally worth it!! The hike took us 6 hours, 5 walking and 1 at the lake. I was very sure I wanted to see Iceberg lake, but was not sure we could make the long hike. Luckily, we didn't come across the bears but I did start loudly singing whatever popped in to my head! This was by far our favorite hike of our trip to Glacier! The lake is worth the hike! Enjoy! She told us to make a lot of noise for the rest of the hike and to report the bears if we saw them. On the way back to the trailhead, we were met by a Park Ranger who informed us that previous hikers reported seeing a Mama Grizzly and 2 cubs on the trail ahead of us. Both of our friends ran out of water in their packs before we completed the hike.

Hubby topped off our hydration packs at the lake with a liter bottle of water that he thought to bring. The water is stunningly cold! Make sure you pack plenty of water for the hike. The water is beautiful, and there were many icebergs floating in it a few days ago! We waded in and kept our feet in for a bit. Ironically, we passed a female ptarmigan and her chicks on Ptarmigan Pass! The lake is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Very few times was this courtesy bestowed to us in return be sure to pack your trail manners folks! The hike is easy. We pulled over to let faster hikers go by many times, and also to allow oncoming hikers to pass by in places where the trail was about to narrow. It was a very warm day out, and you are in the direct sunlight for most of the way, so make sure you bring lots of sunscreen and a hat if possible! This trail is very well marked and well hiked. Hubby and I hiked this trail on Sunday July 15th with a friend couple.
